NAGPUR: It was during the lunch break on the final day of their three-day tie against Yorkshire at Leeds (Manchester) that young Saurabh Tiwary came to know about his selection for the Asia Cup.
"I was pleasantly shocked when our coach Praveen Amre broke the news to me," a beaming Tiwary told TOI after the end of the day's play. "There are plenty of emotions within me. I don't know how to react... it will take some time to sink in," said the 20-year old left-hander from Jamshedpur.
Asked whether he was aware that Monday was the day when the national selectors would pick the team for the Asia Cup, Saurabh said, "Yes, I was aware of the selection committee meeting today. I was also a little hopeful. But when I finally got to hear the news, I was over the moon."
With the India A team moving to Leicester in the evening, a dinner treat for his teammates will be Saurabh's first big celebration. "Like every other cricketer, the India cap means a lot to me. Hopefully, this is the first step for me in international cricket. As I keep saying, the ultimate aim is to play Test cricket," said the player whose shoulder-length hair and the ability to play big shots has made him famous as Dhoni II.
Saurabh hogged the limelight when he played a stellar role for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. He displayed enough silk and steel in compiling 419 runs from 14 games at an impressive strike rate of 136.48. The fact that he hit the most number of sixes (18) for his team - Keiron Pollard was the next best with 15 - underlines his ability to play the big shots.
He has also hit three hundreds in five Ranji games at an average of 98.83 for Jharkhand this season. If he keeps his focus and works hard, he can make waves on the international circuit just like his statemate Dhoni.
